About Us

Salvatore Petruolo, (1857-1942), Italian, "A Dusty Road at Sorrento", signed, oil on canvas, 108 x 61cm Hammer Price: £18,000.

The name of Olivers has been known in the auctioneering profession in Sudbury since 1766 when Joseph and William Oliver set up business as Auctioneers and Appraisers in Market Hill.

In 1780 the firm sold furniture belonging to Richard Gardiner (Gainsborough's brother-in-law) and in 1784 furniture for Mrs.Mary Gibbon (Gainsborough's sister).

On 16th January 1792 at the Coffee House, Sudbury, William Oliver sold Gainsborough's House for ?350.

Sworders joined forces with Olivers at the beginning of January 2006 and the new arrangement enables us to offer vendors in Suffolk all the services currently available at our Stansted Mountfitchet Auction Rooms and through our office in Hertford.

We hold three selected auctions of Fine Art and Antiques during the year, and two of Arms, Armour, Militaria and Medals. We also hold fornightly auctions of Antique and Later Furniture and Effects.

Please see the Calendar page for details of those dates.
