20/10/2016 20th Century Art & Design
Ian Simpson was the Principal of the St Martin’s School of Art from 1972 until 1988, and influenced several generations of artists and designers. His books on drawing and painting argued that the creation of art is not the preserve of the exclusive few, but a talent we can all have if nurtured. Three 1970s linked TV series complemented these publications, while Simpson also found time to paint.
Now Sworders are to offer furniture from his estate, which reflected his love of post-War design, at their 20th Century Decorative Art and Design sale on October 25. They include a 'Cormorant' folding chair designed by Ernest Race in 1959 and manufactured by Ernest Race Ltd, labelled with 'Regd. Design No.894601'; a pair of 'Chevron' chairs, designed by Robin Day for Mike, in 1959, with brown upholstered back and seat; a teak 'Hilleplan' sideboard designed by Robin Day for Hille, c.1950s, labelled to top left drawer, Hille of London; and a DA sofa designed by Ernest Race.
The small collection is on offer in the 20th Century Decorative Art & Design Sale on Tuesday 25 October.
