Joseph Landau with his purchase
Pictured here is London Judaica dealer Joseph Landau who travelled to Sworders in Stansted Moutfitchet yesterday with the sole purpose of buying a charcoal and white chalk drawing by the Jewish artist Simeon Solomon (1840-1905). Five telephone lines competed against Joseph who was the winning bidder at £6,800.
" I would have paid considerably more, said Joseph.”It's very rare to have an artwork that has a Jewish subject matter - in this case a man carrying the Torah Crown - by a Jewish artist”.
Associated with the Pre-Raphaelites, Simeon Solomon (1840-1905) was noted for his depictions of both Jewish life and same-sex desire. He achieved notoriety after he was caught engaging in sexual activity with a man - a scandal that the cut short his career and contributed to the alcoholism that blighted his final days. His reputation has recovered in recent years: the recent exhibition exhibition Queer British Art 1861-1967 at Tate Britain included seven works by Solomon.

We are excited to present seventeen lots by the unique and innovative Prunella Clough. This fantastic collection has come from the estate of antique dealer Christopher Bangs (1951-2022). The pair had a working relationship that developed into a deep friendship and the majority of the works on offer have come directly from the artist.
