Richard Oliver was a British politician and statesman of the 18th century. At an early age, he was sent to London to work for his uncle, Richard Oliver, a West India merchant. He took up his freedom in the Drapers' Company on 29 June 1770 and was later elected alderman of Billingsgate ward. In March 1771, he became engaged in the famous struggle between the city and the House of Commons and was committed to the Tower by order of the speaker on the 26th of that month. After written pleas to state officials and the City Council and application for representation, the end came at the close of the parliamentary session on 8 May when he was released from the Tower. Oliver resigned his gown at the Court of Aldermen held at the Guildhall on 25 November 1778 and shortly afterwards sailed to Antigua in order to look after his West Indian estates. He died on board the Sandwich packet while returning to England on 16 April 1784.

As you cannot attend the auction in person we can bid on your behalf. You can leave an absentee bid on our website.

The amount you bid should be your maximum bid. We will bid up to that limit for you, and remember you may end up paying less than your limit, depending on other bidding on the day.

You can leave an absentee bid up to half an hour before the start of any sale. Please note when we receive two or more absentee bids for the same amount, the first bid received will be the one taken.

If you would like to leave a commission bid on our website you can do so up until 30 minutes before the sale starts. Leaving a commission bid through sworder.co.uk is free for all registered clients. Thereafter you may register bank card details under your account in order to bid live. Click here to register an account.

Telephone bidding

If you would like to bid by telephone please contact our team prior to the auction with your details of the lots you are interested in and your full name, address, telephone number(s) and email address. Once our team have entered your bid request you will receive an email confirmation. We will contact you during the sale and one of our team will bid live with you over the phone.

Please note that we normally offer this service for lots with an estimate of £500 or higher and all telephone bid requests must be received by close of business the day before the auction.

Once logged in you will be able to see the current bidding that lot has reached, together with our guide estimates of its value.  The value you bid excludes buyer’s premium of 30% (including VAT) which will be paid in addition, except for our Fine Wine and Port auctions when it is 18% (including VAT).

When you have placed a bid you will be receive a confirmation email. If you are outbid at any point you will receive a subsequent email notifying you, giving you the chance to increase your bid amount.

We are pleased to announce that our Stansted Auction Rooms will be open for all collections from Monday 15 June.

In order to comply with social distancing we will operate a booking system for collections – please see here for more details and to book a timeslot.  Whilst you may turn up for collections without an appointment, we very much suggest that you book as we expect to be busy and will prioritise those that have pre-booked.  Instructions surrounding social distancing and your appointment will be sent by email after booking.

We are able to provide you with a pack and send option for jewellery, coins and smaller items with an auction value of less than £2,500 and where the total weight of the package is below 2kg. Please note we are unable to post out fragile items (china, glass, etc), or paintings.

The costs are as follows for the total weight of package:
Less than 1kg - £15
From 1kg-2kg - £20
For packages between 2kg -5kg with a value of less than £500 - £35.

If you would like to take advantage of this service please do let us know when you purchase the item or when you receive the invoice, so we can revise your invoice accordingly.

Please note that all lots from should be paid for and collected by 5pm on the Friday following the sale from our Stansted Auction Rooms, unless alternative arrangements have been agreed with us.

We have been pleased to store items free of charge which were purchased before lockdown or when our offices were closed prior to 15 June.  We will continue to provide free storage for the immediate future for these items.  However, for June’s Homes & Interiors sale please see instructions below and note that we will need to re-introduce storage charges for furniture.
 

Storage Charges For Furniture

Furniture lots from our Homes and Interiors sale remaining after 5pm on the Friday following the sale will attract a storage charge of £10 for administration plus £2 plus VAT per lot per day. 

Furniture lots from our Specialist sales will be removed to Perry’s storage facility for collection and attract a storage charge of £20 for administration plus £2 plus VAT per lot per day.
