An ebonised coromandel and inlaid octagonal centre table

An ebonised coromandel and inlaid octagonal centre table,
designed by E W Godwin (1833-1886), probably manufactured by Collinson & Lock, raised on turned tapering legs, supporting horizontal bars centred with a spindle, fitted with brass caps and castors,
101cm diameter
73.5cm high

The table is believed to have been purchased by Andrew Muir (1817-1899), a wealthy merchant who, with Archibald Mirrielees (1797-1877), established Muir & Mirrielees in Moscow. The department store became a household name throughout the Russian Empire - Chekhov went there to buy his hats, ordered furniture from them for his house in Yalta and even named his dogs after the founders.

Following the Revolution in 1917 it was nationalised and named TsUM which continues to trade.

Entered for sale from a descendant of Andrew Muir.
