Axton Grand with Horn – Fine English Phonograph

Axton Grand with Horn – Fine English Phonograph:
On 9 November 1903, a 'Trademark' application was made by William Everett Scott of 27 Worship Street, London EC (Later moved to City Road). On the 10 December 1903, a demonstration of the 'New Machine' was reported in the Manchester Courier. In December, the London Shop in City Road started stocking the machine. In March 1904, Axton Trademark Registered. In April 1904, the Axton Machine used to stage a show by Mathew Bros & Co., Romford Essex. On 24 July 1905, 'British Phonograph Industries' is incorporated. However, on 17 February 1906, an application was made seeking the winding up of Axton Business. In January 1918, Axton Trademark was cancelled.
35 x 30 x 36cm

No evidence is available to establish how many Axton Grand Phonographs were produced and sold. No evidence can be found of an Axton Grand being offered for sale at Auction. I can therefore only assume that my father purchased the machine privately.
The Axton Grand is exceedingly rare and difficult to establish how many surviving examples exist. I would like to thank the CLPGS for their assistance regarding my enquires about this elusive machine. The example illustrated does not have a winding handle/key, but with appropriate engineering, one could be made. The machine is in a very fine condition and comes with an original reproducer. The lot includes a letter from The British Science Museum in reply to a letter sent by Russell Barnes regarding the Axton and is self-explanatory.

Condition Report

Lacking key so no guarantee motor works, but seems to be no reason why it would not. Base of machine is hollow(?), machine and case in generally very good condition

Buying a pre-loved, antique, or vintage item not only provides you with unique style and value for money but it also helps to reduce landfill, and the annual emissions of an antique or vintage piece can be as little as one sixteenth of those of its new equivalent!
