British School, c.1940s
The Blitz, a pair
one incorporating 'London ... Burn' in the design, oil on canvas
both 30 x 45.5cm, unframed (2)

It is likely that these two pictures were painted by a firefighter during the years of the Blitz. In 1940, the Fireman Artists' Organising Committee was founded and included artists such as Paul Dessau, Leonard Rosoman and Norman Hepple. Some of these artists were amateur, whilst for others it had been their profession before the war. In August 1941, the Royal Academy hosted a charity exhibition of work by firefighters to raise money for the London Fire Service; it proved very popular and reportedly attracted 30,000 visitors.
