Tirzah was born Eileen Lucy Garwood, but was nicknamed 'Tirzah' (a corruption of 'Tertia', as she was the third child). She became an assured, sensitive and prize-winning artist. In 1930, she married Eric Ravilious and assisted him with many projects, including the murals at the Midland Hotel in Morecambe. She gave up her art to raise her three children, beginning again after the premature death of Ravilious in 1942 and her remarriage in 1946. Sadly she, too, died prematurely, in 1951 after suffering from cancer.
Her autobiography, edited by her daughter, Anne, 'Long Live Great Bardfield...', was published in 2012. The Fry Art Gallery, Saffron Walden and Towner Art Gallery, Eastbourne hold collections of her work.
