Richard Strebel (German, 1861-1940)
'Baldur and Herta', Newfoundlands on a beach
signed, inscribed and dated 'Richard Strebel Munchen 99' l.r., also signed, inscribed with title and dated verso, oil on canvas
62.5 x 78.5cm
Strebel depicts two important Newfoundland dogs that helped establish the breed in Germany. Professor Waszily of Von der Ostsee Kennels was a founding member of the German Newfoundland Club in 1893, which became one of the largest breeding clubs for Newfoundland dogs in Europe. Waszily bred Herta and Baldur, who were born from the same litter on 28 May 1898. Strebel was a famous animal painter and produced an illustrated two-volume work titled 'The German Dogs and their Ancestry' (1903-5). He produced a similar painting depicting the three varieties of Newfoundland playing on the beach for the German Newfoundland Club, which became their club emblem.

Condition Report
Framed size: 80 x 96cm.
Canvas is unlined, stretcher marks are apparent, some craquelure and surface dirt, a very small loss in sky area, the surface is covered in an uneven varnish which makes any reading under uv light difficult; however, there has possibly been a little strengthening to the darker tones of the dog's coat and possibly also in the background. Would benefit from a surface clean. Generally in a stable condition.
