A collection of carte de visite photographs relating to Agnes Bennett

late 19th century and later, of medical interest, comprising an example depicting the Women's Medical School Committee, Edinburgh, 1899, showing Agnes Bennett, Eleanor Sproull and Ella Watson, annotated verso, 9.9 x 14.1cm, the card by Alexander Ayton of Edinburgh, a similar example of Agnes Bennett in graduation dress, 14 x 9.6cm, the card by Freeman & Co Ltd, 318 George Street, Sydney, and a collection of approximately 16 large format and 70 small format cards, to include wider family members (qty.)

Agnes Elizabeth Lloyd Bennett was an Australian-born doctor who was awarded an O.B.E. for her work relating to the health of women and children. Bennett studied at The Edinburgh University, which was one of the few institutions to accept women to study in the late 19th century. During the First World War, she became the first female commissioned officer in the British Army, working as a medical officer in Cairo.
