Fine Interiors - Two Day Sale

  Lot 108

A pietra dura panel

A pietra dura panel,
late 17th century, Florentine, possibly by the Grand Ducal workshops, depicting towers in a Tuscan landscape,
17.5cm wide
23cm high

Provenance: The Estate of Sir Jack and Lady Baer.

Literature: A Massinelli, 'Hardstones (The Gilbert Collection)', pp.41-43, p.47.

Similar examples, fitted in a cabinet on stand and a casket respectively, are known in the Gilbert Collection; Anna Maria Massinelli in 'Hardstones', draws comparisons between these and a series in a cabinet formerly at Villa Poggio Imperiale, the documentation for which dates back to 1691. She remarks that this style of decoration is 'typical of the burgeoning late seventeenth-century taste for landscapes'.

Condition Report

Later gilt frame with minor wear. Please see additional photos for reference to condition.

Examined out of the frame. The panel is set into a later wooden frame, suggesting that is unstable. A small piece of the limestone border is loose, but sits into place quite snugly and is held in place when within the giltwood frame. Cracks to borders and image, including a 7cm crack to the top right corner of the image. Some scratches and surface wear. Dirt, discolouration and patination. Approx. 0.8cm loss to bottom left corner. Small area of loss to bottom right corner.

Buying a pre-loved, antique, or vintage item not only provides you with unique style and value for money but it also helps to reduce landfill, and the annual emissions of an antique or vintage piece can be as little as one sixteenth of those of its new equivalent!
