Studio of Miguel Canals (Spanish, 1925-1995)
Bowls of cherries, birds and flowers
signed with monogram l.r., oil on canvas
70 x 170cm, in a painted frame
Provenance: Valerie Wade, London, 1995;
The Late John Scott-Oldfield, 65 Warwick Square, Pimlico, London, SW1.
John Scott-Oldfield was a lover of music, art and history, with an instinctive desire for adventure to faraway places. The interior of his flat at 65 Warwick Square encapsulates a thoughtful mixture of styles, from Renaissance Europe to Qing Dynasty China to Georgian England, representing the impact of his academic interests as well as his love of travel on his decorative aesthetic.
The collection is sure to generate huge interest among collectors, dealers and interior designers alike, and Sworders are privileged to have been asked to disperse his estate, which will be offered in three upcoming sales: Fine Interiors, Old Master, British & European Paintings and Asian Art.
Sold for £9,500
overall dimensions of frame: 116.5 x 216cm
There is some craquelure to the surface and some cockling, surface dirt. On close examination there are apparently large age cracks over some of the surface, see images. Under uV light, these cracks fluoresce, suggesting there has been shrinkage and infilling. It is not clear in this case, however, whether this may have been done deliberately by the Canals studio to lend the paintings the appearance of greater age. The surface appears consistent with other examples the specialist has seen in the past.
