ACCESSORIES BUG CATCHES ON AT SWORDERS
The Accessories bug has clearly caught on at Sworders. Six months on from our inaugural Accessories auction, the auctioneers reported a flurry of consignments forthe 15 December sale, with some extraordinary highlights.
Specialist Prudence Hopkins is particularly delighted with a selection of artist-printed silk scarves from the 1940s onwards, including examples by Patrick Heron (1920-99), estimated at £300-500, and John Piper (£100-120), as well as a Hermès silk 'Astrologie' Scarf, in gold and silver colourway (£80-£120).
“These beautiful items – among the hottest vintage property of the moment – are classics from the post-war era, made popular by the likes of Audrey Hepburn, and are priced at a level so that they are an ideal place to start for anyone thinking of putting together a collection of vintage couture, clothing and accessories,” says Prudence.
She is equally delighted with another strong showing of bags after the runaway success of the June sale, where a limited edition Ralph Lauren Ricky handbag sold for £6000.
On December 15, highlights include a Chanel red caviar leather quilted Grand Shopper Tote bag (£1200-£1500) and a Chanel Black Lambskin Jumbo Classic Vintage Mademoiselle flap bag (£3000-£5000). Slightly lower down the price scale, but no less impressive, is a Tom Ford Carine black leather handbag (£500-£800)
. Ralph Lauren makes another appearance with a pair of red suede Adair knee-high boots, with box, size US7B (£150-£250), while a pair of Balenciaga Paris shoes come guided at £100-£150, and a pair of Fendi brown suede knee-length boots, with gold buckle decoration, (size 39) at £300-£500.
“Our first Accessories auction in June not only brought the saleroom a whole new audience, it also boosted prices for items that usually sell for less when lotted for general and other sales,” said Prudence.
“Consignments for the December sale show just what an impact the launch of this new specialist area has had. And with Christmas only ten days later, this could hardly be better for those looking for that unique and perfect gift.”
