Prior to our forthcoming Jewellery auction on 26 February, we are absolutely thrilled to share one of its highlights: a Victorian emerald and diamond crowned heart ring. Featuring a pear-shaped emerald adorned with rose-cut diamonds, it is in exceptional condition for its age. The emerald's attention grabbing bright green hue stands out from the silver-topped setting and the original patina permeates the ring with history and romance. For centuries the crowned heart symbol has served as a powerful emblem of love and fidelity, where the heart represents love and the crown signifies loyalty. Whilst engagement rings were not common until Victorian times, crowned heart rings set with rose cut diamonds or rock crystals were used since late 17th century as betrothal rings. They were also utilised in mourning jewellery.
