In the 1970s Powell moved from his native South Wales to study at West Surrey College of Art and Design. Having established other businesses in the area, in 1997 Powell purchased 10 acres of land near Churt, Surrey which enabled him to once more pursue his passion for the arts. Over the next 20 years he embarked on establishing an arboretum and water garden, together with some two miles of paths, thus creating the ideal environment in which to view outdoor sculpture.
Specialising in contemporary pieces by up-and-coming young artists Powell is keen to support, the Sculpture Park has become an admired open-air visitor attraction, a popular Instagram destination and a successful e-commerce business.
Now in his late 70s, Powell continues use his discerning eye to buy pieces for the park and its 365-day-a-year art exhibition, however, he feels the time is right to rationalise the collection to give visitors a more superior viewing experience. Whilst much of the day to day running of the business has passed to his daughter, all the pieces in sale have been carefully selected by Powell and he very much hopes they will be enjoyed in their new surroundings after the sale.
