In 2022, a probate valuation in Kent uncovered an important single-owner collection of Japanese arms and armour. Recognising the highly specialist nature of the collection, we engaged expert consultant Peter Smith to support the appraisal and ensure each piece was accurately assessed.
Following the valuation, we presented the executors with a comprehensive proposal for sale, detailing our recommended strategy and marketing approach. Sworders then coordinated all logistics - including the careful removal, secure storage and full insurance of the collection - providing complete peace of mind for the executors throughout the process.
We managed the entire consignment from start to finish, ensuring that any items unsuitable for our own sale were appropriately placed with a trusted third-party firm.
The collection culminated in a dedicated single-owner auction in November 2023, achieving just under £90,000 in hammer and attracting successful bidders from eight countries.
This exceptional single-owner collection originated from a probate valuation in remote north-west Cumbria. The enquiry came through to our Chairman one evening as he was driving home: “I have a probate valuation for you…the trouble is it’s in Cumbria.” Despite the remote location, Sworders took on the project, resulting in a distinguished sale in January 2019.
The collection featured Modern British art, fine jewellery and antique furnishings, with standout works by Dame Elisabeth Frink, Sir Cedric Morris, Sir Eduardo Paolozzi, Sir Jacob Epstein, Mary Fedden and others. A particularly notable highlight was Paolozzi’s bronze bust of Count Basie - one of only three known examples and the only one ever to appear on the market.
The sale achieved an impressive total of £546,000 and attracted 279 buyers from 15 countries, underscoring the strong international interest in the collection.

Open Market valuations for potential consignment are provided free of charge.
For professional valuation reports, e.g., for Inheritance Tax or insurance purposes, Sworders charges £300 + VAT for the first hour and £200 + VAT for each subsequent hour. This includes administration costs and mileage within a 100-mile radius. We also offer a full-day rate of £1,500 + VAT per valuer (8 hours).

For items that are not suitable for auction, Sworders can arrange for their clearance. This may involve referring the items to a third party for sale, for which we will obtain your written consent to pass on your contact details, donating them to charity, recycling, or disposing of them, depending on the nature of the items.
Prior to conducting our valuation, we ask you to provide details of any bequests or items of shared ownership to ensure these are dealt with correctly and accounted for on the valuation.
