Stephen started his career at Garrard and Co, The Crown Jewellers in 1981 working for the Director and Crown Jeweller handling some of the world’s rarest jewels. Whilst there, he formed an Antiques Department, which took him off to country auctions on a regular basis, something he found exciting.
In 1987 he moved to Bonhams to lead their Jewellery department and develop a calendar of sales, leaving the position after 10 years to write ‘Millers Guide’, a book on antique jewellery, and become a freelance specialist.
In 1999 he was head-hunted for the position of European Director of Jewellery in London and Geneva, where he achieved a world record per carat for a vivid blue diamond.
Stephen joined Sworders as Head of London in 2019, working from the firms newly launched gallery space in Cecil Court. Whilst jewellery remains his passion, he has a good knowledge of antique English furniture and Old master pictures, once seeking out a lost Constable sketch in a London house that had been overlooked by another auctioneer.
