Lot 10 (Sporting Art, Wildlife and Dogs - Live Online, 6th October 2020)

William Huggins (1820-1884)

William Huggins (1820-1884)
'Portrait of a Favourite Horse'
signed and dated 1849 l.l., oil on canvas
49 x 64cm

Provenance: James Hargreaves of Blackburn, thence by descent.

Exhibited: Blackburn Gallery, 1907, no.100.

This work by Huggins is an exceptional example of his skills as an equestrian painter. An article by the critic Luke S Walmsley, in the Northern Daily Telegraph of 30 April 1907, refers to 'A Favourite Horse' by Huggins as a notable work in the 1907 Blackburn exhibition. Text from the 1907 exhibition catalogue remarks:

'100. Portrait of a Favourite Horse, William Huggins, 1820-1884. Lent by J. Hargeaves, Esq.

Huggins was sometimes styled the Liverpool Landseer, but he resented it, for he believed (not without some reason) that he was Landseer’s superior as a painter of animals. This picture shows the masterly manner in which he could paint a horse, and he was no less happy in his treatment of a wide range of animals.'

Sold for £3,900

Condition report

The canvas is unlined. There is some craquelure. There is a small repaired puncture to the right edge with corresponding wax to the reverse and retouching to the front. There are some small flecks of retouching in places, probably due to flaking paint in the past, and possibly some strengthening to the darker tones to the lower right, however the work is largely untouched. The work has been cleaned and a new varnish applied. Presented glazed, probably in its original frame.

James Hargreaves was a tobacco importer base in Blackburn. The present owner purchased the work through auction from his descendents.
