The Douglas Sweet Collection of Silver Spoons
Mr Sweet started his collection of spoons by giving his wife a birthday present of a spoon. This acted as a catalyst for him collecting examples from the 17th and 18th centuries with an emphasis on the Sweet family of silversmiths through to trying to amass as many examples of picture-backs that he could find. His wife hopes that the sale of the collection gives an opportunity to collectors both young and old to buy a piece of it and to continue her husband’s enthusiasm for collecting.
A Charles I West Country/London silver seal top spoon,
by John Greene I of Salisbury, London 1637,
with a Salisbury ‘B’ type seal, faceted stem, the finial with traces of gilding, prick-dot initialled, EO’ over ‘EC’ over ‘63’,
16.8cm long, approximately 1.4oz weighable silver
Literature: See pp.16, 26, 28, 29, 30 and 31 in ‘Salisbury Silver and its Makers, 1550-1700’ by Tim Kent, published by The Silver Society, Spring 1993, where Mr Kent mentions, ‘This makers mark has been noted on eight spoon with full London hallmarks and Green must have entered this at the London Hall’.
