Feliks Michal Wygrzywalski (Polish,1875-1944)

Feliks Michal Wygrzywalski (Polish,1875-1944)
Pushing the boat out
signed 'F.M Wygrzywalski' l.r., inscribed and dated '1932' verso, oil on board
33 x 45cm

Feliks Wygrzywalski was born in Poland in 1875. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich and then at the Académie Julian in Paris, before settling in Rome for a number of years. In 1908, he returned to Poland depicting scenes of daily life in the country with striking realism. During his later life, he lived in Lwów and ran a successful art salon, selling works as well as creating his own paintings. In 1944, he fled Lwów as the Red Army began their invasion of Poland. He died a few months later after suffering an injury.

Wygrzywalski frequently focused on the subject of fisherman. In this work, Wygrzywalski demonstrates the heaving motion as the fishermen pull the boat on to the shore while contending with the waves that threaten to destabilise it. The sea is highlighted with azure blues while bright oranges and yellows also jump out from the composition. There is a sense of a hot sun making all these colours more brilliant, which only adds to the impression that these figures are struggling in the heat of the day. The work speaks of Wygrzywalski distinct style, which is clearly informed by his time studying at the French Academy in Rome, as well as learning from fellow Polish artists.
