The Who, Live Aid, 13 July 1985
gelatin silver print, printed 1985, signed in pen by David Bailey and also signed on reverse by Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle and Kenny Jones, stamped 'ARCHIVAL DAVID BAILEY' and with pencil initials 'DB 85 2/3'
50.5 x 40.5cm
This photograph was taken by David Bailey backstage at the iconic Live Aid concert during the summer of 1985 for a benefit auction hosted by Sotheby's later that year. Each print is signed by the photographer and the majority are signed on reverse by the subject. Only three of each image were printed for the auction.
Live Aid was a dual-venue benefit concert held on Saturday 13 July 1985 and an ongoing music-based fundraising initiative. The original event was organised by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise funds for relief of the Ethiopian famine. The event was held simultaneously at Wembley Stadium in London and John F Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States.
On the same day, concerts inspired by the initiative took place in other countries, such as the Soviet Union, Canada, Japan, Yugoslavia, Austria, Australia and West Germany. It was one of the largest-scale satellite link-ups and television broadcasts of all time - an estimated global audience of 1.9 billion, across 150 nations, watched the live broadcast. This was nearly 40% of the world population at the time.
