Abraham Storck (Dutch, 1644-1708)

A Mediterranean harbour scene with merchants in the foreground and a States yacht at anchor
signed 'A. Storck/fecit' l.l. (on stone), oil on canvas
58 x 78cm

Provenance: Robert Burke, Australia;
His sale, 'The Robert Burke Collection of Antiques and European Art', Victoria, Forauction, 26 February 2024, lot 4.

A prolific and accomplished marine painter of the Dutch Golden Age, Abraham Storck operated a large and productive workshop in Amsterdam, which enabled him to create an extensive body of work. He specialised in maritime subjects, including naval battles, shipwrecks, and bustling harbour scenes, often infused with dramatic atmosphere and precise nautical detail - likely reflecting the influence of Willem van de Velde the Elder and Younger.

This evocative composition represents a characteristic Mediterranean port scene, a genre for which Storck became especially admired. Here, Dutch merchant vessels are set against a vivid, imagined southern landscape populated with classical ruins and bustling figures. His works recall the influence of contemporary Italian art, though there is no record that Storck ever travelled to Italy. His imagery was instead shaped by a synthesis of artistic sources, including Italianate landscapes popular in Dutch art and the works of other marine painters of his time.

The background features a hillscape with Tuscan overtones, while the rocky terrain and dry palette hint at a Sicilian setting. Interestingly, the architecture features inconsistent, Italian landscapes, yet the lighthouse in the foreground bears a resemblance to Genoa’s iconic 17th-century La Lanterna, demonstrating Storck’s imaginative blend of accurate maritime elements and fantastical architectural motifs. This mixture of invention and realism anticipated the capriccio genre that flourished in 18th-century Italy, underlining Storck’s role as both a documentarian of seafaring life and a creator of elaborate visual fictions.

Condition Report

Framed: 82 x 101cm
Relined. Craquelure. A little rubbing to extreme edges with light surface dirt. In our opinion, when viewed on the wall under normal lighting conditions the painting presents well. Examined under UV light there is extensive retouching and infilling. This is most apparent to the sky and buildings, however a layer of varnish covers much of the surface and may obscure further restoration. A circular area of overpainting floresces above the tower in the centre and further spots of overpainting fluoresce in the lower right and along the lower edge. Please see additional condition images.
