Lot 22 (Sporting Art, Wildlife and Dogs, 25th April 2018)

Harry Hall (1814-1882) 'BON MOT'

Harry Hall (1814-1882)
Oil on canvas
40.6 x 50.8cm

'Bon Mot' was a bay colt who provided the young John Osborne, then only about 16 years of age, with his first major win on the turf - The Liverpool Cup of 1849. Starting as the outsider of a field of ten, at a price of 20 to 1, 'Bon Mot' won by a length from the 2 to 1 favourite 'Essidarius'. The following day he was saddled for the Bentinck Memorial Race and, with Osborne again in the saddle, he came home again.

Sold for £2,600

Condition report

The canvas has been lined. There is a light craquelure throughout. Under UV light there is some retouching apparent to the extreme left and right edges due to peripheral frame rubbing. There is are also several small isolated spots to the sky where, there have been a few minor abrasions. The horse is fluorescing a little dark, however I can see no reason why it would have been repainted as there doesn't appear to be any damage, so it is probably either a general light wash, or the pigments, used by the artist which are showing up.

Overall, the picture is well presented in a period gilt frame, ready to hang.
