Lot 25 (SILVER AND JEWELLERY, 24th November 2015)

An early 20th century Burmese bowl

An early 20th century Burmese bowl,
by Maung Yin Maung, Rangoon c.1910,
stamped 'MAUNG YIN MAUNG MASTER SILVER SMITH 29 GODWIN ROAD RANGOON' to base, of circular form decorated in high relief with Jataka scenes with a frieze above of arching ‘clouds’ terminating in ogres' heads typical of the work of this silversmith,
23cm diameter at widest, 20cm diameter at top of bowl, 15cm high, 37oz

This lot is sold with ‘Silver from the Indian Sub-Continent and Burma during Ninety years of British Rule', Wynyard R T Wilkinson, London 1999, where there is a similar bowl illustrated p.43.

Mr Wilkinson writes that it was rare to find a piece signed in English, indicating that it was probably an exhibition piece.
