The Kray Twins

The Kray Twins,
1965, a rare folder of courtroom documents comprising the cases of The Queen vs Kray, Kray and Smith on 8 March 1965, and the subsequent trial on 29 March 1965, composed of two handwritten transcripts covering the trials, together with five machine-typed police reports relating to the aforementioned trials, and two contemporary newspaper clippings mentioning the acquittal from these charges, in A4 format,
32 x 20cm

Provenance: Leonard Ernest 'Nipper' Read QPM. The transcripts remained in Mr Read's possession until his death in 2020, thence in the ownership of the family.

The following five lots are from the estate of Leonard Ernest 'Nipper' Read QPM. Read was the superintendent of the Metropolitan Police's Murder Force from 1964 until his retirement in 1977, tasked with bringing down the notorious Kray Twins from the first day of his appointment. Read would spend the next three years compiling evidence against the Krays until their eventual arrest in 1968, with the trial commencing in January of 1969. The Kray Twins were eventually found guilty of the murder of Jack McVitie, or 'Jack the Hat' as he was commonly known in the London underworld, after he had given evidence of the Krays' criminal activity to Read.
