Condition Report

Oil on canvas which has been lined. The canvas is in plane with good tension. The paint is slightly raised in areas following the lines of age craquelure. There are scattered retouchings across the surface, in the background these are covering the age cracks. Areas of retouching have discoloured over time; this is particularly noticeable in the sitter’s face. The varnish is yellowed and slightly matte. Dirt and old varnish residues are present in the texture of the paint, noticeably in the lighter paint passages. There is a layer of thick surface dirt present. The frame has suffered from woodworm damage, although this is only evident from the reverse and does not appear to be active.
