Condition Report
The canvas is lined. There are two sratches to the surface to the lower left, see illustration. The one nearest the edge is just superficial paint loss. The second has pierced the lining canvas but not completely torn the lining canvas, although it can be seen from the back. See illusration. There is craquelure throughout and stretcher marks apparent. There is a vertical line down the left side of the composition with some minimal retouching at points, see photo with my finger indicating the location. Under UV light, there is evidence of minor spots and flecks of retouching in places throughout the composition, mostly to the background but there is a small scratch to the face which has been repaired, see illustration. In general, however, for a painting of this size and age it has survived very well and there are no large areas of retouching apparent or signs of repaired tears.
The work is the compainion for 'Portrait of the Hon-ble Sir John Brydges', sold by Abell Auctions in Los Angeles, lot 4, 21 February 2021, catalogued as "Attributed to".
