Affordable, practical and powerful were words most used to describe the TR3 series by Triumph. In 1953, at its introduction, 100mph-plus open-top motoring meant it was as much of a success in England as it was for the rest of the world. By mid-1956, the Triumph TR3 was producing up to 100bhp with the revised and well-sorted Vanguard-derived 2.0 engine. By August, new Girling disc brakes were introduced, and by the end of the year, the stronger Phase III rear axle was made standard, further adding greater performance to the simply built sports car. When the TR3A was introduced in 1957, it was mechanically the same; however, it brought the classic egg-box grille to the full width of the front, giving it a much-needed facelift, as well as a few extra conveniences such as a lockable boot, standard toolkit and exterior door handles.
Originally built as a home-market white car with a black leather interior, it was interestingly fitted with a black hardtop, side curtains, Michelin tyres, overdrive, and competition front and rear suspension. Currently, it is presented in a very handsome shade of British Racing Green with an oxblood red and white piped leather interior, fitted with a 2.0 engine and a 4-speed gearbox. It comes with a full tonneau cover, spare and inertia seatbelts, ready for the prospective owner to use and enjoy. This car benefits from having had an in-depth restoration nearly thirty years ago, where it was stripped back to bare metal and rebuilt, including receipts for thousands of pounds worth of cappings, bearings, fittings and components. Since then it has covered less than 150 miles, which means its still in very tidy condition.
Recent recommissioning this year includes a new water pump, brake overhaul, new tyres, some re-wiring, new mirrors, seatbelts, new battery and new fuel pump, as well as sourcing and fitting of a set of correct steel wheels and hubcaps, which makes this Triumph a very practical sports car indeed.
MOT until March 2026.
