A Norwegian silver peg tankard,
by Berendt Johansen Platt, Christiania between 1656 and 1671,
of cylindrical form supported on three rampant lion ball feet headed by acanthus decoration, the tubular scroll handle with grotesque mask and beading, terminating in an escutcheon, the hinged cover inset with a medal* surrounded by a chased band of foliage with rampant lion ball thumb piece, the front of the body finely chased with the finale of a bear hunt, one man on horseback, another on foot, helping him with the kill with five dogs to assist, with the bear attacking a fallen victim, all within a border of grotesque and Moresque figures, masks, animals and foliage, gilt interior with six pegs, engraved with ‘CESB’ to base,
20.25cm high, to top of finial, 45oz
*The medal inset in the cover depicts Queen Sofia Amalia, the reverse depicting her husband, King Frederick III of Denmark. They were married in 1643. The medal was designed by Erich Parise.
Peg tankards were made, during the 17th and early 18th century in Norway. There are a series of spaced pegs inside the tankard marking the amount of liquid that would be consumed by one person before being passed on to another during a ceremonial toast.
Berendt, Johansen Platt/Plate was one of the top silversmiths working in Christiania from around 1646 until his death in 1689. He was married to the daughter of another local silversmith, Jochim Haveman.

Cover doesn't sit flush, it wobbles. The hinge is loose and has damage to one end. There is solder beneath one side of mount surrounding the coin. The mount is coming away from the coin and cover. Therefore the coin is a little loose. General, wear including rubbing of detail to lion and handle. The lion thumbpiece has a dent where it has made contact with the handle when opened. Surface scratching and small dents to both body and handle and cover. Some small spots of corrosion to, underside of cover.
