*John Gilroy (1898-1985) A DESIGN FOR A GUINNESS POSTER Gouache 51.5 x 37.5cm

*John Gilroy (1898-1985)
51.5 x 37.5cm, unframed

Born in Whitley Bay, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, John Gilroy showed a love of drawing from a very young age, copying cartoons from 'Punch', and was a cartoonist for Newcastle's 'Evening Chronicle' from the age of 15. He won a scholarship to Durham University, but his studies were interrupted by World War 1, during which he served with the Royal Field Artillery. He resumed his studying by taking a place at the Royal College of Art, graduating in 1923, but staying on as a teacher until 1925. After joining the advertising agency, S H Benson Ltd., he worked on campaigns for Bovril, Skippers Sardines and Colmans of Norwich, but is most well-known for his designs for Guinness. These included the 'Guinness for Strength' campaigns of the early 1930s, and the Guinness animals and zookeeper posters and press advertisements of the 1930s to 1960s. He was also an accomplished painter of portraits and landscapes, and his work was exhibited at the Royal Academy. He was made a Freeman of the City of London in 1981.
