The Saab 96 was released in 1960 as a replacement for the Saab 93 model. Initially available with only a 3-cylinder 2-stroke engine until 1967 when, under a veil of secrecy, other engines were tested, before the 1498cc Ford V4 unit was chosen for installation. The 96 was transformed because of this, allowing it to compete on an entirely different level on both the retail market and, indeed, the competitive rally circuit, where the V4 claimed World Rally Championship crowns in both 1973 and 1976.
This Saab 96 was manufactured in 1977, first UK-registered on 11 January 1977, and is fitted with the 1498cc V4 engine mated to the column-change manual gearbox. It is finished in the striking colour combination of Opalgrun paintwork with a black interior upholstery.
'RAR 155R' has a recorded mileage of 21,418 miles (at the time of consignment), which is believed to be genuine. This was the owner's pride and joy from new, and has been kept in a garage for much of its life, and unused since the owner's death in 2023.
