A truly exceptional example of Volvo's iconic 240 Series and, importantly, the flagship GLT model. Representing the final years of production, this estate is presented in the most desirable specification available for the 240 at the time. With exceptionally low mileage and remarkable originality, it stands as a rare survivor in genuinely unrepeatable time warp condition.
Originally supplied by Ivan Kessell Volvo, the car appears to have served as a demonstrator before being purchased by its first private owner just two months after initial registration, with only 350 miles on the odometer. With Ivan Kessell Garages listed as the first keeper, this is effectively a one-owner vehicle that has been cherished for 36 years. The history file is outstanding. It includes the original bill of sale, extensive handwritten maintenance notes detailing dates, mileages and works carried out - from differential oil services and cambelt checks to tyre rotations and brake inspections. A full complement of MOT certificates and receipts supports the vehicle's exceptionally low mileage. An odometer replacement at 28,000 miles in 1998 is fully documented, with the original unit retained, verifying a genuine total of 62,367 miles from new - an average of under 1,700 miles per year.
Finished in Silver with the distinctive black coach line exclusive to the GLT, the paintwork and trim are immaculate throughout. Subtle GLT distinctions include black exterior detailing in place of chrome, 15-inch 'Virgo' alloy wheels, headlight protectors, and a straight exhaust tip, complementing the model's slightly lowered stance. The car appears to remain entirely rust-free, having been treated from new, and retains all factory panels and etched glass.
The cabin presents as beautifully as the exterior, featuring black buttoned-leather upholstery, matching velour door cards, and deep carpets offset by a pristine headliner. Everything appears very tidy, down to the original Volvo 'snow mats' and the rear-facing bench seat that makes this a full seven-seater.
Equipment includes:
• Heated and electrically adjustable mirrors;
• Heated front seats and rear screen;
• Power windows (all four);
• Central locking;
• Power steering and brakes with Volvo's 'triangle' safety system;
• Volvo Sound System;
• Intermittent front and rear wipers;
• Seatbelt reminder and headrest cushions;
• Factory tow bar
Power comes from Volvo's robust 2.3-litre B230E 'Redblock' engine with mechanical fuel injection, paired to the five-speed M47 gearbox, a more refined setup than the earlier four-speed with overdrive. The GLT specification features uprated anti-roll bars, stiffer springs, and gas shocks, delivering a confident, planted ride. This example is also equipped with the factory G80 locking rear differential, a rare and desirable option that enhances traction in slippery conditions.
Recently recommissioned after a period in dry storage, the car has been serviced with fresh oil and filter and issued with a current MOT. Three sets of keys are present, including the original valet key.
With its low mileage, impeccable specification, and one-owner provenance, this 240 GLT Estate represents the pinnacle of Volvo's legendary 200 Series - a collector-grade example of one of Sweden's most beloved classics. Opportunities to acquire a GLT of this calibre are exceedingly rare; this is an ideal candidate for preservation, investment, or discerning enjoyment.
