'Champ de Courses', is a wonderful preparatory sketch for an oil painting, 'Le défilé' by the Impressionist artist, Edgar Degas. The work is now in the collection of the Musée d’Orsay and also known as 'Chevaux de Courses Devant les Tribunes'. It shows the start of a race, where the riders are preparing to line up. We see the ghost of the second to right horse and rider of the final painting in our sketch, however, apart from this figure, the sketch is empty of horses and crowds. Degas focuses on the architecture, tracing the grandstand and the shape of the course on to which he will later add his thronging crowd and skittish horses. Despite this loose portrayal of a galloping thoroughbred, Degas has managed to convey the frenetic energy of the horse and the atmosphere of the races.
