  Lot 205

205

A Japanese bronze vase

A Japanese bronze vase,
Meiji period (1868-1912), of elongated baluster form with a flat shoulder and short splayed mouth, decorated with a cockerel perched on the branch of a blossoming prunus tree, signed Koichi, the base incised with the mark of the Nogawa Company, combining stylised versions of the hiragana no and the kanji kawa,
36.5cm high

The Nogawa Company was founded in Kyoto in 1825, as 'a manufacturer of bronze and fine art wares', and the company went on to show pieces at many exhibitions overseas between 1893 and 1910. As well as showrooms in the upmarket Kyoto and Miyako Hotels, which were popular with visitors to Kyoto, they also had a 'must-see' city store.

Buying a pre-loved, antique, or vintage item not only provides you with unique style and value for money but it also helps to reduce landfill, and the annual emissions of an antique or vintage piece can be as little as one sixteenth of those of its new equivalent!
