Baroness Julie von Bodenhausen-Degener (1902-1951) was a German dancer, singer and actress who, after making her film debut in Britain, headed for Hollywood, where she worked under the name 'Luli Deste'. She had spent much of her childhood at Schloss Neubeuern, the Bavarian castle owned by her uncle, Jan von Wendelstadt (1856-1909). Jan was an avid art collector, whose companions were German artists and intellectuals, and it was under his influence that the Schloss became a cultural centre. His interest in art also extended to items from the East, and he took several trips there, bringing back souvenirs of Chinese bronzes, Japanese screens and porcelain, even displaying a large pair of Chinese lion dogs in the castle gardens.

A Studio Manasse portrait of Luli (as Baroness Luli von Hohenberg) can be seen HERE as part of the Taussig Collection held by the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia.
