A Chinese gilt bronze musical table clock

A Chinese gilt bronze musical table clock, the white enamel dial with Roman numerals, surrounded by ornate foliage scrolls, the corners decorated with lines of alternating red and yellow calibré-cut paste, the clock surmounted by a double gourd, similarly decorated with a red and yellow paste outline and with Daji (great good fortune) in red paste above a radiating rotating spiral with a bezel set with two rows of graduated red and white eight cut paste, all topped by a paste set pineapple finial, surrounded by four revolving paste set flowers issuing green painted foliage, the clock standing on a rectangular plinth with further revolving paste set flowers at each corner, the front and the sides with cut-out scenes revealing cranes in a lotus pond with watery automaton glass rods, all on foliate scroll and paw feet, mechanism with maker's signature, 96cm high

Condition Report

Galleries fallen off, flowers fallen off, some birds missing, birds and flowers chipped.
Some glass tubes missing, one vertical rod missing. Some paste missing or replaced. Some parts missing.
Glaze missing from panels and one back door, the lower back door panel fallen off.
Scratches and minor dents. Gilt rubbed.
Signs of recent repairs.
Mechanic not tested, cannot guarantee if it is working, recommend to view in person.

Believed to have been in the Baptiste family of Monte Carlo, purchased in 2001 from a descendant. (The Baptiste family were in business in China from the late 19th century to the early 20th century).

 

IN PERSON

If you cannot attend the auction in person we can bid on your behalf. You can leave an absentee bid on our website.

The amount you bid should be your maximum bid. We will bid up to that limit for you, and remember you may end up paying less than your limit, depending on other bidding on the day.

You can leave an absentee bid up to half an hour before the start of any sale. Please note when we receive two or more absentee bids for the same amount, the first bid received will be the one taken.
