awarded to 11539 Gnr T W Gudgeon HQ 106 Bde RFA, to include, a Military Medal, the War medal, and the Victory medal, and a later QE II, T & AVR 'For Efficient Service' medal, awarded to 2324259 S Sgt R J Gudgeon RCT, his son, to include a framed photograph of Gnr T W Gudgeon, 48.5 x 64cm overall (5)
Thomas Gudgeon was born in 1899. He lied about his age to join up aged 16. He was awarded the medal for Bravery in the Field after he was in the trenches at the Battle of the Somme; His officer left the trench, going over the top to fight. He was instantly wounded, so my grandfather left the trench to retrieve the officer. He brought him back to the relative safety of the trench and administered first aid. The officer survived his injury thanks to my grandfather’s intervention and was commended to receive the Military Medal. After the war my grandfather became a psychiatric nurse and met his future wife, also a psychiatric nurse, at Friern Barnet Mental Hospital. They supported many war veterans scarred by their experiences.
His son's medal is part of the lot, and a photo of him wearing it in his Mess uniform is shown, but not part of the lot.

Buying a pre-loved, antique, or vintage item not only provides you with unique style and value for money but it also helps to reduce landfill, and the annual emissions of an antique or vintage piece can be as little as one sixteenth of those of its new equivalent!
Sworders is proud to be supporting the work of Antiques are Green - the movement that was founded in 2009 to promote “a greener future created from the past”. Read their fascinating carbon footprint study of a Georgian chest of drawers versus a modern equivalent here
