An Anti-Gallican Society enamel badge,
c.1740-1760, probably Battersea, the oval plaque depicting the arms of the Society featuring St George on horseback spearing the Royal Arms of France beneath Britannia, and flanked by a lion rampant and a grey double-headed eagle above the motto 'For Our Country', within a scrolling gilt metal frame,
The Anti-Gallican Society was formed around 1745 in opposition to the influx of French goods then coming into England, and the pervasive cultural influence of France. One of the early Grand Presidents of the Society was Stephen Theodore Janssen, proprietor of the Battersea Enamel Works in London. It is likely these medallions were first produced at Battersea and continued in Birmingham after 1756 following the failure of Janssen's venture.

Sold for £1,000
Hairline cracks to the reverse old collection label reads ' 366 Gil 253/54' gilt frame pitted, small crack radiating from the left hand edge, light scratching to the enamel.
Probably damage/restoration to the lion's mane, seems a little crude in comparison to the rest. Photos taken under UV light show a little colour disparity and some hairline cracks.
Area surrounding the lion feels dull when tapped with a pin.
