'The Order of Industrial Heroism' medal
awarded to Frederick Harding 16th October 1932, with the certificate, framed
Extract from the Daily Herald, 17th October 1932,
'Herald Heroism Order for miner':
'Although badly burned himself when an explosion occurred in his working, Mr Frederick Harding, a miner, carried to safety in the Bargoed House coal colliery one of two boys working beside him. Then he went back and rescued the other. For this act of bravery in July last, Mr Hardy was tonight presented by Mr William Mellor with the Daily Herald order of Heroism at the workmen's institute. Hardy undoubtedly saved the lives of the two boys, Bryn Roberts and Raymond Jones.'
The Order of Industrial Heroism was instituted in 1923 by the Daily Herald to recognise the deeds of valour by ordinary workers. Eric Gill designed the medal and the certificate which depicts St Christopher bearing the Christ Child. Of the four hundred medals awarded, many were posthumous.
