Condition Report

The canvas has an old reline. There is a large patch to the verso corresponding to the upper left of the composition where there appears to be a repaired tear. There are two further smaller patches which probably relate to repaired punctures to the canvas. There is craquelure throughout and stretcher marks are apparent. In parts, the craquelure is lifting slightly however the work does not seem to be unstable. There is a bulge to the upper right corner where the canvas has had pressure applied from the reverse. To the extreme right upper edge, there is a little tear to the original canvas which has not gone all the way to the lining canvas.

The surface is covered with a thick layer of discoloured varnish and there appears to be additional varnish added to the sky creating a shiny layer around the edge of the bushes. Under UV light it is hard to see if there has been any retouching as any restoration will probably have been carried out many years ago, plus due to the opaque nature of the varnish. However, with the eye retouching can be seen to the areas corresponding to the patches, and also to the upper right background.
