signed 'Sylvia Bergin' l.l., gouache

Sylvia Bergin Rowley left school at sixteen to study at St Martins College of Art. In 1930, she married Owen Rowley. The couple travelled extensively, living for a time in Glasgow and then Manchester where they came to know LS Lowry and were invited on painting trips by him. Returning to London with their son Christopher after the Second World War, Rowley became part of an artistic London set, teaching at the Grosvenor School of Art and also at the Heatherley under Iain Macnab. From the 1960s onwards she dedicated herself to painting, exhibiting at the RA Summer Exhibitions. She and her husband also held a two-man show at Sadler's Wells (1976). Buying a pre-loved, antique, or vintage item not only provides you with unique style and value for money but it also helps to reduce landfill, and the annual emissions of an antique or vintage piece can be as little as one sixteenth of those of its new equivalent!
