[AMERICAN REVOLUTION] Collection of Letters: CORNWALLIS, Charles, Lord: Two autograph letters Signed to: Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Stewart (16th July, 1781: It is not improbable but I shall soon be with you in South Carolina.. ) & (Jan 2nd 1784). A full transcript of both letters is available; Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Stewart: (Battle of Eutaw Springs): An eight A4 page letter dated: Eutaws, 9th Sept 1781 'Copy of my outlook letter to Lord Cornwallis, after the action at the Eutaws 8th Sept 1781' [NOT SIGNED]: 'My Lord, With particular salutation I have the honor to inform your Lordship that on the morning of the 8th instant I was attacked by the rebel general Green with all the force he could collect in this province and North Carolina- and after an obstinate engagement which lasted near two hours I totally? Defeated him…'; A copy of a three page letter from Stewart to Cornwallis, Signed; Two A4 sheets: 1- A return of the number of officers, non commissioned officers, rank & file, sent out on a shooting? Party from the army commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Stewart on the morning before the action at Eutaws Sept 8th 1781; 2- A return of the number of officers, non commissioned officers, rank & file, in the action at Eutaws Sept 8th 1781 commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Stewart; A Copy of a Letter from Lord Kamdon to Col. Balfour, headed: Ninety Six, 27 June 1781. Mentions pursuing “Greene” (Nathanael Greene) passed the broad river at Fiskdan Ford… (With a typed transcript). The original letter with tears to the folds; PLUS: Five other letters from around the same period. (10 items 42 pages including some blank); Plus 2 others, 6 pages (qty.)

The sale features some outstanding highlights, including; eight photographs taken by Charles Dodgson – aka Lewis Carroll – of one of his ‘child friends’, an album of 127 ornithological watercolours by a 19th century German artist and naturalist, a collection of letters relating to the American War of Independence of which two were written to British general Charles Cornwallis (1738-1805) by Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Stewart following the action known as the Battle of Eutaw Springs on September 8, 1781. Also featured is a first edition copy of the first volume of Adam Smith’s The Wealth of Nations has an interesting provenance with the Duke of Sutherland and the economist Edwin Walter Kemmerer among its former owners.
