In July 1801, there were two naval battles between a British squadron under the command of Rear-Admiral Sir James Saumarez and a smaller French squadron supported by Spanish gun batteries. Although the French and Spanish fleets, despite heavy losses, were able to reach Cadiz, the battles were to prove decisive in establishing British control of the Mediterranean.

Condition Report
There are some losses to the edge of the paper. There is a vertical repaired tear along the entire length of the picture towards the left side, this has been conserved with the addition of a strengthening paper to the reverse. There is also a smaller addition patch to the left side. There is significant cockling to the paper caused by water damage and also water and time staining throughout, see images.
