Outline summary
Sworders’ Fine Interiors Department holds four sales a year, each one comprising a covetable selection of period and modern furniture and decorative arts. Incorporating single-owner collections and private estates as well as individual consignments, each auction brings together a wide range of collecting categories, including furniture, silver, carpets, textiles, ceramics, sculpture and works of art from around the world.
We are looking for a Cataloguer who shares our passion for fine objects, important collections and stylish interiors to contribute to the production of four Fine Interiors catalogues per year, as well as offering support for exciting single-owner sales.
Responsibilities
Work within the department to undertake cataloguing of items consigned for sale, be proactive in researching items to ensure accuracy.
- Catalogue a wide variety of items entered for auction, ensuring compliance with house cataloguing styles.
- Demonstrate excellent research skills, drawing on library collections, online databases and internet records to establish bibliography, exhibition history and provenance in support of department specialists.
- Provide detailed condition reports and supporting imagery for all lots catalogued.
- Support in the production of the department’s valuations.
- Assist in the production of the catalogue, inspecting proofs and participating in feedback discussions.
- Monitor condition reports and pre-sale enquiries across all platforms, providing timely additional information and photographs to clients as required.
Assist in the organisation and management of departmental stock and support day-to-day operations.
- Help organise and manage departmental stock, including labelling, locating, and maintaining accurate records of items for sale.
- Collaborate with colleagues to ensure items are prepared and presented effectively for cataloguing and photography.
- Attend team meetings as required, actively putting forward ideas and views that enhance department development.
- Provide general administrative support to the team where appropriate.
Adhere to Sworders internal policies and procedures.

- Attending Sworders events and supporting initiatives where appropriate.
Person Specification
Essential skills
- A firm interest in the Art and Antiques market.
- A minimum of 3 years cataloguing, research and condition reporting experience.
- An unwavering approach to providing exceptional client service.
- Excellent organisational skills with outstanding attention to detail.
- A good team player with excellent communication skills.
- Flexibility to take on additional tasks/responsibilities where needed.
- Self-motivated, confident, proactive.
- The ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
- Enthusiastic with a willingness to learn.
