When one person single-handedly changes the landscape of how we live, that is rare enough, however, when two people are capable of this at the same time, that becomes even more extraordinary. Both Charles and Ray Eames did just that, the American couple pioneered and transformed our domestic and working lives in every way. From modernising housing to redesigning office spaces with iconic pieces such as the Eames Lounge Chair, DSX and DAX models, as well as the ESU storage unit series. The pair minimalised living, making spaces cleaner and lighter, whilst employing pioneering materials for the time such as moulded plastics, plywood and fibreglass. They built up a longstanding relationship with the American furniture company Herman Miller and still to this day many of their pieces are licensed and produced by Vitra. The Eames’s have garnered a cult following over the decades in the design community and auction world and continue to influence designers, makers and artists the world over.
