Textiles & Tapestries

Sworders has built a strong reputation in antique and contemporary textiles and tapestries, valuing and selling significant pieces across the UK and internationally through specialist sales and weekly timed online auctions.

Our specialists possess deep knowledge across the full breadth of the category — from 17th century needlework, samplers, stumpwork and crewelwork, to modern pioneering textile art by makers such as Peter Collingwood. We handle fine hand-woven textiles, silk embroideries, antique tapestries, and decorative woven wall hangings, appreciating both the category’s rich historical tradition and its place within current interior design trends.

Our Fine Interiors auctions are the ideal outlet for exceptional antique European tapestries — Flemish and French examples, among them mythological and verdure pieces from premier factories such as Aubusson and Gobelins. We also have a strong background in presenting for sale fine textiles from across the Middle East and Asia — including Ottoman textiles and Indo-Persian embroideries, where they sit alongside Chinese and Japanese pieces in our specialist Asian and Islamic Art sales.

World textiles are an important and growing part of our offer. We regularly sell Central Asian suzanis and ikats from Uzbekistan, resist-dyed and woven textiles from across Africa, including West African Kente cloth, and Kantha quilts from the Indian subcontinent — pieces that are increasingly sought after by collectors and interior designers alike.

Significant textiles have contributed to the success of several of Sworders’ single-owner sales, including the tapestries of North Mymms Park, realising £965,900, the Guinness family collection of suzanis and Ottoman textiles from Elveden Hall, achieving £21,264, and a Louis XV Gobelins mythological tapestry from Holkham Hall, selling for £11,700.

Whether you are looking to sell antique textiles, buy rare tapestries, or receive a specialist textile valuation, Sworders offers expert guidance at every stage.
