The James Birch Collection - Highlights Viewing | London

21/09/2026 - 25/09/2026 11:00 - 17:30

Sworders are proud to present works from the collection of James Birch, one of the most adventurous figures in contemporary British art. As a pioneering gallerist, curator and writer, Birch is known for championing emerging talent and staging groundbreaking exhibitions that challenged conventions and expanded audiences for contemporary art.

The display brings together 40 highlights from his remarkable collection, charting a career defined by curiosity, risk-taking and a keen eye for originality. Early works by artists he championed in his formative years as a dealer, including Grayson Perry, Jennifer Binnie and Conroy Maddox, sit alongside explorations of the surreal and fantastical through figures such as Reuben Mednikoff, Austin Osman Spare and Leonor Fini.

The gallery view also reflects Birch's extraordinary curatorial achievements, with works connected to his landmark projects, Francis Bacon in Moscow and Gilbert & George and the Communists. Completing the display are icons of British culture, from Christine Keeler to the Young British Artists, offering a vivid portrait of the personalities, ideas and creative energies that have shaped British art over the past half century.
