A bottle of one of the world’s greatest - and most expensive - Burgundies is included in Sworders’ next wine sale. The single 750ml bottle of Romanée-Conti, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, 1937 carries an estimate of £8,000-12,000. That’s around £2,000 a glass.
The 1937 ‘DRC’ is considered the outstanding vintage of a difficult decade. Growing conditions were near perfect for a small crop of concentrated and tannic grapes that have matured across eight decades. Wine guru Serena Sutcliffe called it “pure Christmas pudding.”
The bottle included in our Timed Auction of Fine Wine & Spirits that runs from Friday 30 October - Sunday 8 November comes for sale from an unusual route.
The seller, a fine art and antiques dealer, acquired the bottle of wine earlier this year from a friend who was a sommelier at a restaurant in Paris. No money changed hands for the bottle - instead, it was swapped for some antiques. Whether this proves to be a good deal will be revealed on November 8.
“Romanee Conti is a contender for the best wine in the world. All DRC vintages are desirable but because the 37 is a real rarity it might just surprise us” commented Paul Fox, Head of Wine and Spirits.
