2026 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the death of celebrated Finnish architect and designer Alvar Aalto, whose pioneering approach to architecture and furniture design continues to exert a profound influence on contemporary design.

In 1935, Aalto, Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen and Nils-Gustav Hahl founded Artek, establishing a company whose ambition was to unite art, technology and everyday life. Artek would go on to transform the international furniture landscape, bringing Aalto’s designs to a global audience and helping to establish the principles of Scandinavian Modernism. The enduring appeal of Aalto’s furniture lies in its refined simplicity, sensitivity to materials—above all wood—and the sophisticated technical processes underpinning its manufacture. His experiments with bent plywood and laminated wood resulted in a number of patents and enabled him to create forms that were at once innovative, functional and visually distinctive.

Aalto’s architectural practice was similarly grounded in the concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk, or ‘total work of art’: the idea that architecture should encompass every aspect of an environment. Working closely with Aino Aalto, he conceived buildings in which architecture, interior surfaces, furniture, lighting and glassware formed a cohesive whole. This holistic approach blurred the boundaries between architecture and design, and remains central to understanding the breadth and significance of Aalto’s contribution to twentieth-century modernism.

That influence continues to resonate today. The enduring relevance of Aalto’s designs is reflected not only in their continued production by Artek, but also in the company’s collaborations with contemporary cultural and fashion brands. In 2017, for example, Artek collaborated with cult streetwear label Supreme, introducing contemporary interpretations of Aalto’s Model 60 stool and 400 Tank chair, the latter upholstered in a red fabric inspired by the work of American artist Robert Indiana. More recently, in 2025, Artek marked its ninetieth anniversary alongside the eightieth anniversary of the Moomins through a collaboration that brought Aalto’s design legacy into dialogue with another enduring icon of Finnish culture.

As we commemorate fifty years since Aalto’s death, the group offers an opportunity to reflect on a body of work whose combination of material innovation, functionality and timeless elegance continues to shape the language of design today.
