Fine Wine & Spirits Post Sale Review

Yet again, very little escaped the attention of discerning Fine Wine & Spirits buyers with our June sale boasting a 97% sold rate. Great prices were achieved across all sections of the sale and topped with a single owner collection of Chateau Latour selling for a combined total of £14,915.

A stunning array of Bordeaux led the way, with a single owner collection of Chateau Latour selling for a combined total of £14,915. Gathered over many years, the bottles had been bought predominately en primeur and stored in ideal conditions in the vendor’s private cellar. Stalwarts from the 1855 classification, including Lafite, Palmer, Margaux and Rauzan-Segla amongst many more, proved that their establishment as some of the world’s most reliable fine wines is in no danger of declining, with particular interest in a case of 2013 Chateau Haut-Brion which sold for £3,520. An exciting selection of big name right-bank Bordeaux drew a similar level of attention, with Petrus, Chateau Cheval Blanc, Vieux Chateau Certan and Chateau le Tertre-Roteboeuf all on offer and all certain to delight their astute winning bidders.

Sold £3,900 Chateau Latour, 1er Cru Classe, Pauillac, 1982, three bottles

Elsewhere, a bottle of Chateau Rayas from the Southern Rhone’s immensely popular Chateauneuf-du-Pape region made a staggering £1,300, though even this seems a steal considering it being of the illustrious 1990 vintage – a year when the stars aligned over the renowned old vineyard of the Reynaud family and ideal growing conditions produced a wine of famously unique character, rarely being rated at anything less than 99% by professionals. A bottle of 1990 Krug champagne, made exclusively from the Chardonnay grapes of Clos de Mesnil, soared over estimate to achieve a total price of £1,040. Made only on the best of years, Clos de Mesnil expresses the terroir of the relatively tiny walled plot, producing distinctive characteristics found in no other sparkling wine. And no sale of premium wine would be complete without the presence of exceptional Burgundy, with a 1992 bottling of Bonnes Mares by Domaine Roumier, long established as one of the regions finest wine estates, making £830.

Sold £1,040 Krug, Clos de Mesnil, Reims, 1990

Our spirits section was well-stocked with whisky, and the appetite for old and rare bottlings amongst buyers of such continues to grow, with an extremely rare 1987 six bottle original cardboard case of twenty-one year old Glenfarclas smashing through its top estimate to achieve a whopping £2,900 and a similar story with an equally scarce bottle of fifteen year old Tomatin, bottled in 1981, which rocketed up to a final sold price of £875. A fine choice of old Cognac saw similar success, with two Berry Bros & Rudd bottlings, one labelled as “older than 1878” and another 1904 example each achieving £755.

Sold £875 Tomatin, Very Old Malt Whisky, 15 Years Old, Distilled in 1963, Bottled in 1981, 80 proof, 75cl

all prices shown include Buyers Premium.

There has never been more on offer for buyers, both experienced collectors and those wishing to dip their toe in the water, and for sellers, there really has never been a better time to sell.
